Alice Chittenden
Ceramic Artist
Clay was, and still is, my first love. As a child I spent a fair amount of time creating Playdoh objects. As a teenager I signed up for clay classes at the local art center.
I am drawn to the tactile qualities of clay. I like the challenge of integrating form and surface.
I had a college professor who, rather often, would remind his students about the importance of the sixty-fourth of an inch. His message being that sometimes small adjustments or changes can have a big impact visually.
In my own work I strive for balance. I like my pieces to not be overly heavy. I want my handled pieces (mugs, pitchers, teapots) to feel good in the hand and to pour well. I like my serving pieces to showcase the food contained.
I allow myself the chance to explore, to try new forms and surface designs or textures.
I have reached this point in my life still loving clay. I'm quite sure that is not going to change.
